Billy Stone, like most diabetics, can tell when his blood sugar is dropping. “I get shaky. I can’t really think straight, and I feel weak,” he said.
But that’s only when he’s awake. If his blood sugar drops while he’s sleeping he can go into a coma and die without ever feeling a sign. The condition is called hypoglycemia unawareness. Some diabetics, like Billy, are unaware only when they are sleeping. Others are in danger all the time.

Hypoglycemia unawareness can occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. It often develops after many years of living with the disease.
